Meet Author Sakaiah Reign
Tell us about yourself.
I’m 27 years old and I grew up in a small town. I’m also on the Asperger’s spectrum. I love fashion, women’s empowerment, urban fiction, true crime and spending time with friends and family.
To date, what is your favorite (or most difficult) chapter you have ever written?
Wow! Great question. The most difficult chapter to write of Meeka Chronicles: Love Lies & Broken Hearts was chapter 5. When my character felt hopeless in her family's situation i could see my past leaping back out at me. Though I didn't come from an abusive household, I was narcissistically abused by someone I thought was my friend for a whole summer and felt hopeless.
What do you do when a new idea jumps out at you while you’re still working on a book?
I like to write them down in my notes and save them for specific parts. Kehlani and 90’s R&B are my go to choices for music inspiration
Tell us what you enjoy most about writing.
I like to visit different worlds beyond what I am used to. When it comes to writing there are no rules, you simply make it up as you go and test your limits. I refer to writing as giving my characters a home in the world because there’s someone out in the world who is just like them. Even the most evil ones.
Do you identify with your main character or did you create a character that is your opposite?
I do identify with my character Meeka because often as a young girl I struggled with self esteem, bullying, lost two loved ones to murder and narcissistic abuse. But we're different when it comes down to backgrounds, i’ve never been close to being in a gang.
What has been the toughest criticism you have received as an author?
That I shouldn’t take what i’m doing with my writing so seriously. The other is that my book doesn’t make sense. I’m a passionate woman that is real with her craft, when you down my style its like you don’t have no respect for who i am. What has been the best compliment? This was my very first read from this author and I must say I am impressed! I won’t go into great detail because I usually tell the whole story in my reviews, but I will say the story line was good! There are a lot of characters and a lot of action packed into each chapter. Meeka and Eyez had the action rolling and their daddy was something else. Good job on this read!
What is your favorite line from your book?
“These Streets Don’t Have Love for You.” Why you ask? Because I felt like I was living the harsh life of my father's character, Marcus. He just doesn’t give a damn about anything he says. Usually I’m afraid to be mean, when I wrote that line, I could taste venom.
Have you ever experienced writer’s block? How did you deal with it?
I often experience writers block if were being honest. How I deal with it? I take breaks in between my writing, maybe a week. I’ll listen to music, or when I get an idea I go to sleep with it on my mind and if a line, song, piece of a clue, or change is still there in my head the next morning, its meant to be in the book.
What do the words “literary success” mean to you?
How do you picture it? It means “You’ve accomplished what everyone told you would never ever be able to. You are phenomenal! Keep going for the ones that are struggling and to show them that achieving greatness is possible, no matter how big or small.” I picture it where my book series gets an award and becomes a TV show.
What would you like to say to your readers?
You truly are amazing people and I’m forever grateful for your support! Always remember you are worthy of being loved and to love yourself first. If you have a dream, keep striving for it. The sky's the limit.
