January 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968
Dr. Martin Luther King was a southern minister and social activist. Many would say that he was one of the predominant faces of the civil right movement. His views consist of nonviolent tactics to achieve advancement for colored people. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a law declaring Martin Luther King Day a federal holiday.
