SCBookGal and Friends Author Showcase- Victor L. Martin

SCBookGal and Friends Author Showcase- Victor L. Martin

Victor L Martin is a Richmond, VA native. Martin was raised in Sema, NC and Miami FL. He is 46 with no kids and currently incarcerated until 2023.  He has been a published author since 2003.His debut novel was entitled A HOOD LEGEND. He has a passion for writing and enjoys doing what people believe is beyond his reach. He is very humble, but yet ambitious.

WHAT IS YOUR WRITING PROCESS LIKE?

Being incarcerated allows me to hone in on my writing skills without the daily tasks that come with being free. I hate that I'm in this current situation, so my focus is to use my time wisely here and productively. My  writing process begins with an idea that can stem  from a song or something I read in a magazine. I don't write out any story lines, I simply write as I go. I allow my characters to come alive and steer me in the right direction and ultimately to the end.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS FROM?

I have a wild and vivid imagination and it doesn't take much to get me inspired to move this pen across this paper. I don't follow the norm when it comes to what is defined as urban literature. I like to keep my books up to date and relevant to current times. I also enjoy mixing reality with fiction, yet I'll never tell my readers where those lines cross.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN THE WORLD OF STREET LITERATURE SINCE YOU FIRST BECAME A WRITER?

When I initially dropped my debut novel with TCP, there were only a handful of legit urban authors in  the market. And with that being a fact, the result were some big royalty checks. Now there are hundreds of urban books and authors in this field. What I will never do is criticize my own people that are actively trying to do something positive by writing. I'll give out advice and share my mistakes with them.

DO YOU WANT EACH BOOK TO  STAND OUT ON ITS OWN, OR ARE YOU TRYING TO BUILD A BODY OF WORK WITH CONNECTIONS BETWEEN EACH BOOK?

The majority of my books are stand alone and have no connections with my other works. My latest project happened to be a trilogy and it was an entirely new book. However, I had to pay homage to the character that started it all for me..Menage Unique Legend.

WHAT BRINGS YOU BACK TO THE URBAN LITERATURE GAME?

I want to show my raw versatility with this pen and my overall growth in writing. And I owe it to my mom because she is forever telling me to keep writing.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE UNDER- APPRECIATED NOVEL?

I have a suspense novel coming out this spring called MOTIVE FOR MURDER, and to say it's outside of my comfort zone is an understatement. This novel will showcase my talent and I hope it will be viewed as a suspense novel...period. I feel it should not be classified as urban just because of the color of my skin. If book stores won't  place my book in the suspense section, then I will not allow them to carry it.

WHAT'S THE MOST DIFFICULT THING ABOUT WRITING CHARACTERS FROM THE OPPOSITE SEX?

Trying to avoid any stereotyping. All women are not in need of a man for financial support. And all women are not attracted to a D-Boy. Again, I write fiction, yet I try to keep it realistic.

HAVE YOU READ ANYTHING THAT MADE YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY ABOUT URBAN LITERATURE?

I haven't. My focus is set on writing a better book than my last. I will say this...there are certain individuals in this business that are straight up shiesty! They almost stole my desire to write. They have shaken many budding writers to give up. What I am doing now is building my own brand, under my own company and for those that tarnished this game...karma is real, believe that.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST NOVEL.

My latest novels are MIAMI NIGHTS, MIAMI NIGHTS 2 STILL NAKED, and MIAMI NIGHTS 3 THE CLIMAX. It's an erotic trilogy about a guy that gets out of prison and jumps into the porn industry. It's not a flat out sex novel, it's full of twist and it has a moving plot from start to end. I don't wanna spoil anything in the books,  so you'll have to take my word on it being a good read.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY TO YOUR READERS?

A sincere thank you for their support over these years. Without them, there's no me. I said that from the beginning of my career because it's the truth. I'd also like to acknowledge the few in my corner, Wahida Clark and the entire WCP staff. Author TN Baker, Linda Wilson, author Sereniti Hall, author Renita M Walker, Joylynn M Ross, and a special mention to Patrice Grimball and the staff at ASPIRING AUTHORS MAGAZINE. Thank you all. Keep your eyes dry & your heart easy.   - Victor L Martin
